Before she started her solo career, Eileen fronted the indie-rock band Fledgling. Formed in Eileen’s home town of Boston, Massachusetts, around 1990, Fledgling played on the US East Coast and the London club circuit. They were signed to TVT Records, the label that launched Nine Inch Nails.
The other members of the band were British guitarist David Bull, who went on to play with Eileen Rose & The Holy Wreck until 2008; bass player Dave Bower, who later formed The Dogtones; and Tristan Blakley on drums.
This self-titled debut album was released on TVT in 1995. It was recorded at The Church Studios and Metropolis in London, and Longview Farm Studios in North Brookfield, near Boston. It was mixed by producer Chris Sheldon, who was also working with Therapy and Feeder at the time.
The album includes an early version of "Tom Waits Crooning", which Eileen re-recorded on her first solo album ‘Shine Like It Does’. The song “August”. which Eileen co-wrote with David Bull, featured on the soundtrack of the Sandra Bullock/Denis Leary move in "Two If By Sea" (1996).
Fledgling disbanded in 1997. By that time Eileen was living in the UK. She moved out to a cottage in Essex and started writing songs that would appear on her first two solo albums.
